Moving your Outlook files to a new computer

I need to move my outlook files from one laptop to a new laptop. The last
time I did this, I just copied the Outlook.pst and Archive.pst from one
computer to the other. It worked, but in outlook, it listed everything
twice. That is, it thought it had TWO sets of files, but it only had one.

I read the http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm, and it
has nothing to do with this problem. I know how to backup files and restore
files, etc. etc. I need to know how to move the outlook database from old
laptop to new laptop. Both PCs use Windows XP with Outlook 2003.

I have not yet configured outlook on the new laptop. I have installed
office 2007, and opened and configured Word and Excel.

I have read all the similar postings and none of them address this problem.

Yes it does.

I know how to backup

Since you know how to restore on one PC, you automatically know how to
restore on anotehr PC. Just transfer the PST to the other PC and restore
there.

You can configure Outlook to use the transferred PST as the default before
you configure Outlook by creating your mail profile in Control Panel's Mail
applet and adding the transferred PST to that profile as the delivery
location.

listed my single Outlook.pst and Archive .pst TWICE, as if they were two
different databases. Has anyone else had this problem of the same database
being list twice,a s if it were to seperate and different files?

I assume this "ain't a hangin offense." How do you fix it?

I just did the following, and got incomplete results.

1. On the NEW PC, I did not configure Outlook yet.
2. I copied the Outlook.pst and Archive.pst from OLD PC to NEW PC
3. I started outlook on NEW PC but DID NOT configure it with my POP email
account.
4. On New PC I did a File Open, and selected the Outlook.pst. This created
an Ian's Folder on Outlook, which had my list of folders with email.
HOWEVER, the folders under Favorite Folders, which has the inbox, drafts,
etc. were ALL EMPTY. ALl the emamils etc, In box and Drafts were gone.

I se a restore point on NEW PC, and just used it to get to the point BEFORE
I copied the outlook files. I 'm going to recopy and OUTLOOK files, and set
a new restore point. I will then open outlook on NEW PC and configure it to
use my POP EMAIL, and then do the file open, and select my OUTLOOK.PST.

If anyone knows what I did wrong, please send me the exact steps to follow.
Please don't send me the pointer on how to copy or backup and restore my
OUTLOOK.PST I just followed those instructions and my problem is documented
above.

Thanks. I was able to get what I wanted by playing around with the profiles.
Very frustrating.
