mpd or mpp - which one do you work in?

We saved the mpp file as an mpd file (so that we can link to it from Access
and generate reports). After saving it as the mpd....what is the best
practice for continuing to update the schedule...should we be using the mpd
or should we be using the mpp and then save as mpd each time?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Opening a project (with Project) from mpd or from mpp yields the same
possibilities.
But working directly on the DB is lousy by all means: no GUI, you don't know
what Project is gonna do with the data you enter..

Thanks Jan. We are not changing data through the Db...only linking to some
of the tables in mpd, then generating some reports with Access. Definitely
would not want to update Project without the GUI.

We've started to have some funky things happen in the Project file, and it
was my fear that maybe we shouldn't be updating Project in the mpd, but
should be updating the schedule in the mpp.

I found the difference to be.... when you update the schedule in the mpd it
doesn't update the mpp (i guess that's okay if you only ever open the
mpd).... and I've noticed that if the schedule is updated in the mpp, it
doesn't automatically update the mpd...the mpd needs to be saved again for
thoses changes to appear in the mpd.

So you think updating the Project file using the .mpd is okay, yes?

Thanks!

Hi Marty,

Well yes, in fact when you open the mpd IMHO the active version IS an mpp,
at least it is the same; the mpd is only way to save the data.
