mpeg movie not playing

I have added an mpeg movie to a powerpoint presentation for a client. It
plays fine on my computer, but not on his. I have PowerPoint 2002(sp3), and
my client has the newer PowerPoint 2003. The movie plays fine on his computer
in Windows Media Player. I figured the link to the movie was lost when I sent
him the presentation, so I walked him through inserting the movie. All his
settings for the movie match what I have in my program, but his movie still
won't play. Any ideas?

You may have the video buried to deep in the path/name. Try moving
everything to "C:\test" and see if it all works.

Put the video in the same folder as the presentation and then insert it.

Oh, and it still could be the path length, especially if the client is
working with folders on his desktop. Full path might then be something like
C:\Documents and
Settings\ClientsName\Desktop\presentationfolder\video\nocrying.mpg That's
starting to get pretty long.

One potential problem is the media being in a sub-folder. PowerPoint and
linked elements are tricky (to say the least). But the safest approach is to
have all linked elements (video, audio, flash, etc) in the safe folder as
the presentation. The allows PowerPoint to find the linked file (it will
only look at the folder level the presentation is in) and create a relative
link (vs. a hard link).

It sounds like you created the video. What Codec was used? Is that codec
loaded on the cients system?

The video was provided to me. I don't know what codec was used. I do know
that the presentation played successfully on another person's computer, but
she has the same version of PowerPoint as me. Putting the presentation and
video on the same level seems to be the concensus. I will have my client try
that and let you know if it works. Thank you.

I am hoping that someone is still watching this discussion. I had my client
put the movie on the same level as the presentation. It still doesn't play.
If it is a codec problem, as Tony suggested, how can I determine which codec
it is and get it to the client?

You can try to see if the video play in windows media player.
Also you can right click on the video file to get the 'codec' information.

I am having a similar problem. I downloaded the
pfcmedia. Used it to insert the video and packaged the presentation to a
flash drive. I tried to play the presentation (which plays in the power
point viewer)
on the other computer and the presentation just skips the slide. If I open
the presentation in Power Point and click on the slide, the movie plays. I
created the presentation in Power Point 2003 on a Windows XP computer and am
playing it on
a Windows XP computer with Power Point 2002, but I thought the viewer would
negate the other computer even needing Power Point. Any suggestions?

Joan,

There are all sorts of "Gotcha's" when trying to run a PPT pressie from a
flash drive. I really recommend copying it to the hard drive and running it
from there.

I got it to work. I used PFCmedia to insert the movie. Basically, I
think PFCmedia converts any media to wmv. I think there was a problem with
the orignal slide. I deleted that slide and recreated it, then it played
fine. Thanks for the help. I am pretty new to all this stuff and I just
stumble along learning as I go.

Thanks for the quick response. I tried copying the file and packaging to a
cd. The result is the same. One has a background from a jpeg picture and
the movie was inserted using PFCmedia. The slide transition is set to random
and the time is 00:07. The movie format is set to play full screen. This
slide is completely skipped over when played on the laptop (the other
computer). The second slide has a black background with a movie which was
inserted using PFCmedia. The presentation stops at slide and somtimes plays
the movie, sometimes not. This plays fine on the creating computer. Any
thoughts. Thank you.

Is your movie an MPEG? The codec did end up being the problem with my movie.
I ended up having someone convert it to a WMV file and it played fine. It
just wasn't quite as clean as the MPEG. Also, no matter how I packaged the
presentation, the other computer always lost the link to the movie. I had to
walk my client through relinking the movie, then it played fine.

I'm using PFCmedia which converts the movies to wmv. One movie as an avi,
the other mpeg. I thought if I used PFCmedia and packaged the presentation,
it shouldn't matter what computer I run it on. The problem seems
intermittent.
