mpeg problem

I have several mpegs that me partner has converted from VHS tapes - we
have done this many times before and never had any problems.

This time when I insert the mpegs into powerpoint - they appear in
non-slideshow mode - but when I try to play in Slideshow I just get a
blank white area where the video should play - the videos play fine in
media player for example!

I am stumpeed - can anyone offer suggestions as to what to do next?
