MS 2000 Page X and Y issue

G

Greg

Problem: Footer is set to display/print page number of
total pages, i.e., page 2 of 6. It appears correctly in
print layout view -- every page increases the page count
and total count is correct. When the document is printed
the footer looks like this:

Scenarios tried that didn't work:
Deleted and re-keyed the page footer instructions
Saved the document to new document

Also tried and got weird result:
Took the document to another workstation (same version
of Word)and it displays and prints correctly.

What gives????

You've got the Page X of Y bug. It seems most people who
have this got it after downloading a recent genuine
Microsoft Security update. MS have been informed but so
far haven't issued a fix. In the meantime you may be able
to get around this by selecting "Reverse order printing"
from Options on the print dialogue. More info at:

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/PageXofY.htm. If you have
already applied SP-1, see Graham's reply. MS is trying to collect data on
this problem, so if you have a patched version of Word 2000 and are still
experiencing the problem, please send detailed printer and printer driver
information and a *small* sample doc exhibiting the problem to me.

MS have also requested that we collect more information on the problem. If
you believe this problem was caused by the update in question, please send
detailed printer model and driver information and a *small* sample doc
exhibiting the problem to me to pass on.

Well you could try setting it up by inserting fields
separately using the insert field route.

Unfortunately this one is an old friend (!) I think page
number counts are affected in some way by the use of
continuous sections that don't go over a page break. I
know I have been driven mad by Word 97 insisting that
there were more pages than in fact there were!

Best of Luck

Try this:
When you're in the footer don't type anything.
Go to INSERT onthe pull down menu and Auto Text.
Arrow down the list to "page X of Y" and click
on it to insert it into the footer. Other than
checking to make certain that in the Page Number Format
icon you have "continue from previous section" selected.

I also use Word 2002 as part of Office XP. The feature
worked fine for years and only recently has caused a
problem. As a consultant this is causing me all types of
problems in that I have had to hand correct reports to
clients.

In a previous email it was indicated that reverse
printing will solve the problem. I ahve an HP OfficeJet
and using the printer's revrse printing has no effect.
It appears that {numpages} the field for the total number
of pages is not getting the value from the document
statisticss, but is somehow being pointed to the {page}
field thus page 3 of 3 and 4 of 4 rather than page x of y.

The only solution I can suggest is to remove the
{numpages} field from the document and type in the
correct total page number. That works fine if you
already have the final number of pages but will need to
be changed if the document length is modified.

I have experienced the same bug in the last week. I print
replicate copies of documents, and found that the first
copy in a series is affected: 1 of 1, 2 of 2, etc.
However, the next copies are fine. Using Word 2002 as
part of Office XP, to an HP LaserJet 4100. Same problem
printing on a network printer. Will try transferring a
document to another workstation and printing. I suspected
an update bug, but restore to over a week ago was
unsuccessful in eliminating the bug. Very frustrating.
