MS Access 2002 Pivot Tables Numeric Field

When I choose "Pivot Table View" from a query, my numeric
field is interpreted as text. As a result, I do not get
subtotals and totals on my data. Also, when I copy/paste
numeric values from MS Access 2002 to MS Excel 2002, the
numeric values paste over as text. I then have to convert
the text back to numbers. What is the cause of these two
conversion issues, and what is the solution? Thanks to
anyone who can help.
