MS Excel 97 says file in use when it is not

I use Excel 97 on Windows 2000, on a small network (one of which has Windows
95).
If I close an Excel file in a session, it is then not possible to open it
again (says 'in use': read-only or notify) and I have to reboot.
Any ideas?
