Is it likely that MS Office 2008 solve my present Entourage 2001 (10.1.1)
problem?
Dozens of times during the day mail gets stuck in my Outbox. (Error message
details below.) I've talk to other Entourage AND Outlook users who say they
have the same problem, and that they too have to quit and kill some kind of
background process before Outlook will send.
I'm able use this unpleasant workaround for sending stuck mail:
I quit Entourage, restart, drag the message from the Outbox to the my Drafts
folder. Then I Press Send and Receive (... or choose Send Now). This works
about 80% of the time. When it fails I simple repeat the process until the
message goes. Rarely do I have to quit and restart Entourage more than three
times to accomplish
This workaround is terribly annoying -- partly due to the wasted time
involved -- but mainly because, if I fail to check the status of my outbox,
in the afternoon I'm startled to find messages that I sent in the morning
piled up in my outbox ... waiting yet unable to go.
I'm willing to get Mac Office 2008 ... if it is known to resolve the problem
described. (Perhaps it has a better reubuild function? Perhaps it co-exists
better with background processes) But otherwise, since I have little need
for Office aside from Entourage, I'd rather look at mail alternatives. That
would be too bad, because, aside from this annoying bug, I really like
Entourage. (Also Word always crashes shortly after opening and Microsoft was
never able to resolve that.)
Is it likely I be unhappy with the perform speed of 2008? The criticisms on
Amazon and Wikipedia are fairly extensive.

Using Mac OS 20.4.11
Entourage 10.1.1 (from Office 2001)
The error message is usually -3168.
I've also received error -23016. In response to this message I've performed
both types of rebuild, and sometimes the problem has gone away for a few
weeks. I suppose there a chance that the rebuild is failing to generate a
pristine database.
Again, I've talk to other Entourage AND Outlook users who say they have the
same problem, and that they too have to quit and kill some kind of
background process before Outlook will send.
