MS Office Document Scanning .tif won't import to Office Applications

I scan files using MS Office Document Scanning in Office
XP which are saved as .tif.

Trying to open those files in Word, PowerPoint,
PhotoEditor results in invalid file header errors.

MODS doesn't offer another scanning option.

I want to crop some of the scans.

How?

FWIW ".tif" covers a VERY large variety of sub-file types. For best
results try to avoid compressed types.
