MS Office locks-up when trying to open any folder using either Menu->File->Open or Menu->File->Save

My Parents are having a very weird problem with their MS Office 2003
applications. Starting the night before last, April 12th, my mother
stepped away from her computer to make dinner and when she returned she
could no longer navigate into/through folders from inside any of the
office applications' menu->File->Open dialog boxes. Later my father
discovered that the same was true with menu->File->Save As. Trying to
do either of these actions causes the app to completely lock up.

Saving works and navigating into folders is fine from any other
application, WordPerfect works fine for instance, as well as using
explorer. Documents/spreadsheets/etc open fine if navigated to using
other methods, explorer for instance. Creating and saving a new
document also works fine, provided one does not try to navigate
anywhere when the "Save As" dialog pops up.

At the time my mother discovered this problem everything was running
fine on my father's computer. The next morning his started showing
the same problem.

Both computers are running XP Pro and are completely up to date as far
as updates for both the OS and Office. Also both are running Norton
Internet Security 2006 and Spybot. Both programs are up to date with
the latest definitions etc and report negative for viruses and spy
ware. Disabling Norton from the task bar has had no effect on the
problem.

Finally I should mention that both computers are laptops and neither
have and mapped drives or are using and distributed applications.

This is all the information I have atm. Unfortunately my parents are
both in Europe and I am in the US so I can't work directly on the
computers. Any thoughts, suggestions, information would be very
welcome.

You have the KB908531 problem. Remove that security update and the
problem will go away. Instructions were posted in this newsgroup on Friday.
