MS Office Shortcuts don't work in first level of Start Menu

Vista adds the office short cuts (word, excel) to the first level of the
start menu, but they don't work.
I tried removing them allowing vista to recreate them. They are re-created
but dont' work.
I tried pin to start menu. Again they show up but don't work.
I tried to drag them there (which is pretty cool). Once more they show up
but don't work.

If I navagite through "All Programs" off the start menu the office programs
will start.

I did internet search and this seems to be a commmon problem dateing back to
2007 but I can't find the solution.

Any more idea? Thanks, Duncan.

If I understand 'first level' correctly the only Office shortcuts added,
here, are 'New Office Doc' and 'Open Office Doc'
The usual MS Office Folder exists in All Programs, with Shortcuts to the
various Components.
Its the Office installation that add's these shorcuts, not Vista
If you use help within office theres an article on how to add these two
shortcuts (New & Open)
In any case if you type Word in the Start>Searchbar you will get access to
Word

In vista, when you first click on the start menu you see your 10 most common
applications. Vista adds these autmatically. They happen to be shortcuts.
The MS office ones do NOT work here. Everywell else they are fine.

PS; I understand what you mean now, they work fine here
Its unlikely to be an office problem, more probably Vista
