MS Office slow to access files over a VPN

Deb

We have an office to office VPN over a 2Mb WAN connection from Ireland to
Alabama. Opening network files through MS Office applications is very slow.
We are using Office 2003. Opening these files via Network Places is fine. It
is only when opening the files through an Office app, like Word, that we see
the issue. There is a domain controller, acting as a global catalog server,
in both locations. We've been monitoring the VPN and don't see any problems
with connectivity.

Any suggestions on what to look for?

Thanks.

Hi Deb,

Word works with a lot of temporary files. You may want to try turning on the [x] Make local copy... setting in Word 2003
Tools=>Options to see if that helps.
