MS Office Update - Stuck on 40%

C

Chris Hofer

When I go to the MS Office website to update my Office XP
software, I click on the link to run the program that
searches for updates and shows the percentage bar.
However, every time I try and search for Office updates,
the percentage bar stops at 40%. Then, I get a message
saying there might be an error with the website, I might
have some files missing, etc. Has anyone else run across
this issue? What can I do to fix it?

I have the same problem at home. I did 3 things I think one of which may
have caused it for the third fault in the list below,
Either its because I put in the older office version prior to the upgraded
office version (of which I have a few) My AVG Anti virus (which I Doubt) or
I have used Spybot wrongly.
Anyway My fault also still exists.

"The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer.
This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

a.. 1.You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
b.. 2.There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the
Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page
and try running detection again.
c.. 3.Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied
Office updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on
your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced for future update
operations. If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office
updates. You may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of
the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for
assistance.
d.. 4.You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from
Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more
information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install
Source if Unavailable."

This worked for me without screwing anything else up. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
IN CAPITALS FIRST!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\<Product code number
that refers to Office 2003>\Patchesold
