MS Office X Excel date problem

When I copy and paste a spreadsheet containing dates
written in date format (1/1/04) it sometimes changes the
format to text, as in Jan.1/04. In text format I can not
sort by date or change it back to date format. Is this a
bug in the program? Can I prevent this from occurring?

Are your cells that are converting preformatted as Text? Are you sure
the source you're copying from is in XL date format and not Text?

Or maybe you should just accept this fact of (XL) life and reformat the
destination cells after pasting.

I am not convinced that the target formatting is text. It probably is
<mmm.d/yy>, change it to <m/d/yy>
