MS Outlook Won't Start

D

David Walker

MS Outlook 2000 Premium was working fine for years, but
now hangs when I try to start it. It hangs at the
first "about" screen, and eventually times out with "not
responding" error.

I've uninstalled Outlook, reinstalled Outlook, uninstalled
MS Office Premium (full package), reinstalled MS Office
2000 Premium, and done the installation and service pack
upgrades (1, 2, and 3), but to no avail.

If I start Outlook Express, I can receive e-mail, but the
address book is missing, and I get errors when I try to
open an e-mail.

Any suggestions out there?

Close Outlook. Find outcmd.dat using Windows search. (Note: if using
Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to enable searching hidden and system
folders.)

When you find it, rename it to .old. Then reopen Outlook and it should be a
lot faster opening.

The outcmd.dat file controls the toolbar display. When it becomes corrupt,
it will hang Outlook as it cannot bring up the toolbars - that is why it
hangs at the splash screen. You will need to recreate any custom toolbars
once you have Outlook open again.

For future use, once you have your toolbars arranged how you like them,
close Outlook, find outcmd.dat and copy it to a safe place. That way, if
the file becomes corrupt again, you can just copy your good saved file back
over the corrupt one.

Brilliant! Outstanding! It works! Thanks ever so much!

What is your favorite charity? E-mail it to me, and I'll
send them a $25 donation.

I am glad it worked for you. Any thanks above and beyond those expressed
here are unnecessary.

However, if you insist, volunteer to serve a meal to seniors or shut-ins
over the coming holiday season. I think that the satisfaction will be good
for everyone concerned.
