MS Project 2003 Budget Variance based on timescale

Dasani

I would like to view Budget Variance (Work Variance) on a monthly view
on task usage or gant view in either project or excel. Does anyone
know a way to do this? I've looked at analysis tool and it does not
export work variance. The problem is we need to pinpoint historical
data for variances...

Thanks

You need to access whait is called "timephased data" to achieve this. As far
as I know, such analysis is not provided in Project or Project Server as
standard. I suggest that you save your projects in database format rather
that .mpp files. Then you will need to analyze how this data is designed and
populated in time. Then you'll have to build your own analysis tool. If you
update your baselines or create/delete tasks in the meantime, I think you
will not be able to retrieve accurate information (for reporting information
where actuals are prior to the baseline updates).

Or else you could build a table/view that you can cut/paste each month to an
Excel file (for example you will add one new line or column per month to your
Excel file).

Project also lets you define your own custom export maps using the Save As
menu option. You will find Work variance field there available for export.

Hope this helps.
