MS Project 2003 Running slow

Why does MS Project 2003 eventually run extremely slow? It is the only
application that I will have running. I can temporarily fix the issue by
recreating the user profile in Windows XP. I will run fine then the
application eventually slows way down. I don't know if this is an XP issue
or a Project 2003 issue.

Hi UncleScoops ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

If it is the project at fault, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item:
43. File Bloat? - Might be Corruption.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address:http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

UncleScoops,
On first flush, I'd check for a virus. It also depends on how big your
project file is and on how much RAM you have. It might also be a case of
a severely bloated project file - one that has so much "baggage" that it
can barely calculate itself. A simple way to get an idea if this is the
case is to look at the file size. If it is several megabytes but not
that many tasks, then it is probably bloated. To relieve bloat, go to
our MVP website at: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm
and take a look at FAQ 43 - File Bloat? Might be corruption.

Hope this helps.

I tried this and the project files are not bloated. This did not fix the
issue. Any other ideas?

UncleScoops,
Did you check for viruses? Slowing down your PC is something viruses
often do. And the fact that creating a new user profile initially
improves the performance might indicate that something nefarious is in
residence.

I would also try defragging your hard drive.

Just to double check the bloating, how many tasks are there in your
file? How large is the file (in bytes)?

Do your other apps also slow down or is it just Project?

If no viruses are found and defragging doesn't improve performance, you
might try using Detect and Repair under the Project Help menu. The next
step might be to un-install and re-install Project.

Also, I assume you are not using Project Server. If you are, then you
might want to post to our sister newsgroup at:
microsoft.public.project.server. There might be some issues with the
server environment that I am not cognizant of with regard to performance.
