MS Project: how do I rescue a file that has an infinite predecess.

I added a new task to a file and somehow created a Predessor Loop. I am
unable to re-open the file. It says that it is trying to perform a
calculation and it frezzes after that.

Try setting recalculation to manual with a blank file open, then without
closing it open the offending file.
