You have a couple of options here. First off, your reference for this is the
Configuration Planning guide for Project Server. In there you will find more
detail on this subject.
I would not recommend using Project Professional connecting over the
Internet. Why?
1. First reason is that Project Professional needs to connect to the Project
Server database using ODBC. Most organisations will block this traffic
through the corporate firewall.
2. Project Professional transfers a relatively large amount of data during
project save and publish. This would be very slow when running Project
Professional connecting over the Internet. Some organisations allow client
VPN connections, this will get around the first point I make above but it
will still suffer from this slow performance during save and publish.
Solution: Microsoft recommend using remote access through Terminal Services
/ Citrix for Internet / External access to Project Server from Project
Professional.
