MS Project: What is the Summary Progress bar?

Could you indicate how is this bar used : Summary Progress bar in MS Project?

TheAngel,
The Summary Progress bar is supposed to give an idea of the overall
progress of all the subtasks under the Summary. I say "supposed to"
because the algorithm that calculates the Summary progress is apparently
a well guarded secret. I ran into this issue some months back when I was
trying to answer a similar post from another user. If you want you can
read the original post. Search in this newsgroup for: "Summary Progress
Bar" submitted by "v" on 6 July, 2004.
