How many SQL and MOSS cals to buy?

I am trying to figure out how many CALs I need of MS SQL 2005 and
MOSS.

Scenario: if I plan to get say 5 CALs for Project Server 2007
and I have a group of 20 users. It is my understanding that
the central administrator account interacts with the MS SQL
server database. I am not sure if the same thing happens
with MOSS(Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server)?

Question: How many CALs do I need for 5 Ms Project Professional 2007
Users and 15 Project Web Access Users?
The Project Professional users will use the scorecard
feature of MOSS.

I hope this question makes sense?

You need one SQL CAL for each user of Project Server, so 20 in total for your
scenario.

Project Professional Licence incorporate a CAL for Project Server, so you
will need 5.

You need 15 Project Server CALS

If you using MOSS then you will need 20 MOSS CALS. (WSS does not require CALS)

To complete the picture, you will also need 20 Server 2003 CALS and an
appropriately licenced desktop OS for each user.

Does the DAL pass the users credentials to MS SQL Server?
Does MOSS pass the users credentials to MS SQL Server?

Thank you

No in both cases, however this does not mean that you don't require SQL CALs.

Thank you for your reply.
"Is there any technical reason why I require the same number
of MS SQL Server CALs as I need for MS Project Server and MOSS
especially if authentication is handled by the application servers?
i.e. The MS SQL Server counts the number of open connections
from MS Project Server 2007 and MOSS 2007?"

Sorry to be so dense but most of information I have been able to find
on MS Project Server does explain the relationship between the
number of CALS required on the Backend MS SQL server and
the front end Project Server and Office Sharepoint Server.

thank you

Thank you again. I asked a MS Project Server 2003 administrator I met
who told me essentially the same thing. I did not believe him.
I recall now seeing a web page dated in 2004 I believe stating
that the number of MS SQL CALs had to be the same as the
number on the application server. Since the web page was
a few years old and probably because I mis-read the web
page, I thought if I need 20 CALs for MS Proj Server 2007 and MOSS
each then I needed 40 CALs for MS SQL that is why I posted
this email. To bad Microsoft does not bundle the MS Project
Suite(MS Pro, MS ProjSrvr,MS SQL,(optionally)MOSS) and
sell it based on the number of users. Of course, if licensing
were simple revenue would be lost.

Thank you again,
