MS Query problem

After battling with this problem for 3 years I guess it's time to ask for
help.

I have an Excel 2003 workbook with 6 different queries embedded. Up to 3
years ago they all worked fine. My problems may coincide with the upgrade
from 2000 to 2003, but it's too easy to blame that.

The queries query the same workbook (different sheets) where the queries
reside. The queries return the correct data. However . . .

Most of my attempts to edit the queries fail. Whenever I attempt to edit the
query I get "ODBC Excel Driver Login Failed" and "Unrecognized database
format <workbook>" On rare occasions it sort of works. I just crash through
a few error messages and I can edit. This would only be 1% of the time.

I have written my own simple query editor, and I can change the queries, but
I really want the MS Query graphical editor.

I have googled 100's of 'solutions, but none work.

I have even tried it in Excel 2007 (Compatibility mode) and the result is
the same. Interestingly I can create a new query, and use the graphical
editor, but only once. After that the symptoms are as above.

Help!

If you try to open it directly, is it read only or show open by someone else?
I've seen this error occur in that situation.

Neither - I can't open the query to edit.
