MS Query within Excel won't talk to Access properly

I'm trying to import external data from an Access database into an Excel worksheet. I've been trying to change the permissioning within Access so that I don't have a conflict but I keep getting a can't read table error message everytime I try to use MS Query on the database from within Excel. On tables that I do get, when I try to drag fields from the table into the query area I get a "syntax error on FROM" message. I'm talking about very simple tables with no calculation fields. Just a few fields like last name, first name, address and so on. Does anyone know what I should be doing?
