MS ruler and format paragraph in office xp professional version

When I create a new document my ruler looks funny (almost
like it is in cm or mm) and also when I go to format
paragraph at the lines and spacing tab, under indents
there is ch instead of inches and under spacing there is
lines instead of pts. I went to tools and options and
inches is there. I have windows 98 second edition on my
computer and installed office professional xp recently.
