MS Word 2000 9.0.270 seems to cause disconnect from server

Opening or printing a word document or just opening Word
seems to cause a disconnect from my ISP.
Is there a common cause for this?
I haven't seen a FAQ or article addressing this but may
have overlooked some.
Please let me know if anyone knows how to fix this.
Window ME operating system with Internet Explorer
5.50.4807.2300.
