MS Word 2000 freezes/locks up ...

MS Word 2000 freezes/locks up when editing/viewing document. I have formatted the hard drive and started from scratch ... issue still resides after MS Word is installed. Freezes/locks up when document is all ready open and being viewed or edited. Not user or document specific.
No A/V program is installed. Printer is installed and video card has updated driver.

Word 2000 will lock up/freeze in Safe Mode and with "/a". Have run MS Office2k Windows Registry cleaner and problem still resides.
Have run chkdsk /f and done defrag and still same problem.

Have uninstalled MS Office 2k and just installed Word 2k and still same problem.

Any suggestions????

It freezes in Safe Mode would suggest a nasty problem. Firstly, give your
computer a good clean up. After all those freezes, there will be loads of
garbage left on your computer. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/LockedFiles.htm,
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm for some help with
the clean up.

There is a strong possibility that it may be a hardware problem as there is
no consistency with the problem suggesting some other influence. If the
problem still persists, then try one of the hardware testing utilities such
SiS Sandra.
