I just replaced my motherboard and processor. I now have a P4 Titan GA-8IPE100 motherboard with the Intel 865PE chipset, on which sits an Intel 1.80 GHz Celeron processor
I reformatted my 40 GB Western Digital hard drive to NTFS format and installed Windows XP Professional. I then installed Microsoft Office 2000 Professional. These are the only software applications on the machine. It has no antivirus software, and was not initially hooked to the Internet, so there was no chance for viruses
Now - all of my Office applications run fine, with the exception of MS Word. It loads, the cursor blinks a few times (leaving 'bits' of itself on the screen) and then the computer freezes and requires a hard boot (= reset) to get going again. Initially, when Word first starts, I can navigate around the menu OK without it freezing, but once I've 'clicked' on the typing area (and started the cursor blinking) I'm living on borrowed time - Word will freeze even if I then go to navigating the menus
To try to fix the problem I've
1) 'repaired' the installation through the Control Panel/Add and Delete Programs applet - no jo
2) 'reinstalled' MS Office 2000 (several times) - no jo
3) started MS Word from 'Run' with the '/a' switch - no jo
4) put a Normal.dot file from a machine that runs MS Word fine in the 'templates' folder - no jo
5) renamed the Normal.dot file to Normal.old and restarted Word - no jo
I then hooked up an Internet connection and
6) tried all the potential fixes on http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm - no jo
7) searched for and installed XP updates from the microsoft.com download web site - no jo
8) searched for and installed MS Office updates from the microsoft.com download web site - no jo
9) looked through the various posts on this forum - but many give an error message, so I can't read responses
However - I booted my machine in 'Safe' mode and AHA! MS Word does NOT freeze - the cursor blinks away without falling to pieces - the world is once again a happy place. So - can somebody now steer me through the process for discovering what the culprit may be? Is this the right forum for this question, or should I post it on the Windows XP (or other) forum
Thanks for your help
