MS Word 2003 and XP

I have a IBM thinkpad t-30 with XP Sp1 and Office 2003. When I go to do a
save as word document, it takes forever to be able to scroll to the location
I want to save to. This is whether standalone or when I am on the local lan.
It somtimes even gives me not responding message as well. I have had this
problem since Word 2000. I have tried all the easy remedies like unchecking
indexing search on my local drives, shut off Nav AV- interactive scan while
saving and still no success. What the heck is the problem and how can I fix
this annoyance.

sounds like a network related thing, e.g. when network not there, it is
looking for it, and when network is there, it works hard to find
something. DNS configured correctly?
