MS Word 2003 error

Hi I got this unexpected issue occur - everytime I try to open Word 2003, an
error dialog comes up and states that "Windows cannot access the specified
device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to
access the item."

This issue began about an hour after an event memo which I came across that
stated in the description section:
"Faulting application winword.exe, version 11.0.5604.0, stamp 3f314a2f,
faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault
address 0x005c0035."

What is going on, and how do I fix this? All my other MS Office 11
applications are working fine.

Many thanks.

Hi

I followed the links and deleted the registry Data Key - I deleted the
'Data' folder within the 'Office11' submenu as explained on your page - no
change the problem persists, and now there is no registry data key at all...
How can I get it to work again? Thanks for your tips thus far and hope you
have some solution

Regards,

Rajiv

That article offers a long list of troubleshooting techniques. It seems that
you have tried only one of them?

Actually all the other options are either unworkable or not relevant. For
example, running winword.exe /a results in the same error message "Windows
cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the
appropriate permissions to access the item." And since there is no way to
open word, I can't use the method prescribed to find the startup path. As I
had mentioned in my first posting, upon viewing the system logs through the
Administrative Tools, I came across this message (which now I realise was
loged at the exact time when word crashed the first time) : "Faulting
application winword.exe, version 11.0.5604.0, stamp 3f314a2f, : faulting
module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault: address
0x005c0035"

From all that I have come across on the web the fact that the 'faulting
module' was 'unknown' is very worrying. In all other cases I've seen it is
always some .dll file or other. Here it appears that this error is so weird
that even Microsoft Windows doesn't know what went wrong. And needless to
say, reporting the error to MS was worthless. I checked to make sure all the
files were intact and ran a virus scan on my system as well. All my other
Office 11 applications are working fine. It may be of note to mention that
at the time of the crash, my mother (who was using it at the time) was
accessing a document across a network (i.e. the file was on my dad's laptop
which is on our LAN). Thank you already for trying to help - I have done the
most that I could from gleaning through the web (the bulk my time spent was
on the MVP site) but I seem to have exhausted all my options for now....
Please help.

Kind regards,
Rajiv Mukhi
