MS Word 2003 - stops responding, crashes, reboots in a 3-5 min cyc

I am using MS Office Pro 2003 with MS Word 2003 on a laptop with Windows XP
for several years. My Word program has begun to have a problem whereby after
either using it or letting it stand idle for a few minutes; it enters a 'not
responding' state. When I close out the program (either X or File-> Exit), I
get a Microsoftw Office Word error box -- "Microsoft Office Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience" (no other error message). Word then says it is saving the
Normal.dot file (on the bottom of the app); closes and promptly restarts.
This has been happening for a few days on a 3-10 minute repeat cycle whether
I am using word or not. I cannot close down word!

I don't have the CDs as it came preloaded on my laptop (though I have the
license keys). any suggestions? bug fixes?
