MS Word 2008 student edition keeps crashing

I can't seem to run Word for more than a few functions before it encounters an error and quits. And I can't copy and paste anything without crashing. This is beyond frustrating. If I can't get this to work, I'll have to go back to MS Word 2003. I'm operating in Mac OS 10.4.11, on a Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz.

Well, your choice of word processor is entirely your affair. Nobody here is
going to care whether you use 2008 or 2003.

However, the problem is probably the Normal template inherited when you
installed.

1) Close all your Microsoft applications.

2) Delete your Word 2008 Normal template.

3) Re-name your Word 2004/2003/X Normal template. You MUST do this, or
Word 2008 will try to import incompatible settings from it, and that's
probably what has caused the problem.

4) Start, then quit, Word 2008. That will create a new, clean, default
Normal template.

Then put your old Normal template back if you like. Remember to disable it
every time you want to replace your Word 2008 template, otherwise you are
going to get this problem every time.

Thank you for your advice, John -- but so far it hasn't worked.

When I originally installed Office 2008, it removed my old Office X. All the new programs worked great except Word, and when it kept crashing, I re-installed my old Word X just to get my work done.

So when I read your post and tried to follow those directions, the only "Normal" template I could find in my whole system was in the old Office X Templates folder. There is no such folder in my Office 2008. I went ahead and opened up Word 2008 then quit as you advised, it said it was saving the Normal template, and quit normally -- then gave me the same error message. I launched it again and tried opening an older Word file, and it crashed again.

I've also tried installing this on another computer, and same issues -- all other programs work well, but Word keeps crashing.

Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Well, your choice of word processor is entirely your affair. Nobody here is

We were having the same problem on several Macs here at my office.
This was our solution

Shut down all Office software including My Day

Go to:
Home folder/Library/Preferences

There should be a Microsoft folder in there, move the folder somewhere
else just incase this doesn't help you have the folder still. Then
startup your Office programs again and it should rebuild the folder
and preferences in the folder. After we did this it seems to have
solved our problem so far. Hope this helps.

Wow, thank you Seth, it worked! I took the Microsoft folder out of Home Folder/Library/Preferences as you suggested, and let Word create a whole new one when I opened it. Now I'm up and running with Word 2008 thanks to you!

Hi Seth:

Yes, good call!

Startup Crashers are either Preferences, Normal Template or Fonts.

In 2008, Fonts appears to have gone away as a startup crash issue.

However, 2008 is more sensitive to munged preferences than 2004 was, so your
solution is a good first stop.

Replacing the Normal template is another thing to try.

Did you ever have Word X on that system?

If so, try this:

Remove or rename ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

It's possible to have preferences in the Word X settings that will crash
Word 2008 if it tries to import them.

Thanks John for your suggestion. Yes, I did have Word X before, and when I installed Word 2008, it removed Word X. Then I re-installed Word X when 2008 kept crashing; it's still there now.

But ever since I tried Seth's solution of removing the original Microsoft folder in Home Folder/Library/Preferences, Word 2008 has worked perfectly. As long as it's working, I'm not going to mess with anything. I'll keep you posted.

Did you ever have Word X on that computer?

If so, try this:

Remove or rename ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

It's possible to have preferences in the Word X settings that will crash
Word 2008 if it tries to import them.

Once you get Word 2008 to successfully start, you should be able to re-start
Word X. It will re-create its preferences, but by that time, Word 2008
should have lost interest in them and you're good to go.

It's only when Word 2008 does its first run, and finds something it doesn't
like in the Word X preferences, that it crashes.

There's a fix on the way ‹ no idea of the timing ‹ "when it's ready" :)

I am having a similar problem. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint all crash very quickly into usage (doesn't matter what I'm doing in these apps).

I've tried trashing the Office 2008 folder from my prefs folder and this didn't help.

Some info about my system:
MacBook Pro (new revision - Peryn)
NVIDIA card
Office 2008 Student edition
Office 2004 student edition

Both versions of Office are up-to-date

the basic prefs aren't in the Microsoft/Office 2008 folder anymore. Look
for

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.office.plist

and the XL/PPT equivalents and test those.
