MS Word 97 document reverts to orriginal save

BJ

I Recently upgraded to Win XP and I am still running
Office 97.

My prolem is that changes made to some of my Word
documnets after the initial Save/Save As are not there
when I reopen the document. However if I look inside the
documnet with Notepad or a Hex Editor I can see those
changes in unicode.

"Allow fast saves" is enabled. I've turned it off three
times now, something keeps turning it back on.

1. Is there a fix that will stop this happening?
2. Is there any way I can recover my documents short
of copy typing the lost information from the
raw document into a new document?

FastSaves is probably the root of the problem: it maybe that you have one or
more rogue copies of normal.dot on your computer. Open Windows Explorer and
make sure the options are set for you to see hidden files and system files
and that file extensions are not hidden. Then search for normal.dot.
Theoretically, there should only be one normal.dot and it should be fount in
documents and settings/username/application data/Microsoft/template folder.
Rename any others that you may find as normal.bad, normal.ba1, etc. then
retest to see if you can get FastSaves to stay set.

Meanwhile, you can force a full save of your documents by using SaveAs and
choosing a new name.

Thanks for the help Tezza.

Rogue Normal.dot's taken out behind woodshed and shot.
Efigy of Bill Gates burnt. Open office Prayer Wheel
spun. Unfortunately "Save As" truncates documnet to what
I can see.

Looks like I get to do what I had to when I ran "Recover
*.*" on my mum's work machine to "recover" an
accidentally deleted file. Rebuild it by hand. BTW: I
got the file back. No prizes for guessing which file
didn't survive the process.
