MS Word Autonumbering Glitch

When I type a sequentially numbered list, say, an assignment sheet with numbered section headings within each chapter, the first chapter will autonumber nicely, but I cannot get it to work on successive chapter, no matter what I try. Word Help is apparently useless on this....surprise surprise
If you can help me, thanks in advance!

Have a read of this, then come back with specific details of what you are
doing:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/

I suspect you may not be using the built-in Heading styles to format your
headings? If you are, your numbering will "just work". If you are NOT,
it's a lot of work to get it working.

I suspect that you are not using the built-in style "List Number" for your
numbered lists. If you do, again they will "just work", and if you don't...
Well you have found out what happens when you don't :)

Hope this helps

Thanks for replying, John. How do you use the built-in style "list number?" When I go to format, bullets and nimbering, and then select the 1.1, 1.2,1.3, option, it just prints out the series of numbers, all on the same line. If I backspace, it all goes away, and I am back to square 1, so to speak.

What I am doing is creating assignment sheets with multiple chapters, and several sections within each chapter. Like below:

Chapt. 1 Solving Equations
1.1 SOlving Equations by Adding
1.2 SOlving Equations by Subtracting
Chapt. 2 Solving Inequalities
2.1 xxxxxxxxx
2,2 xxxxxxxxxxxx

And so forth. Chapter 1 always autoformats perfectly. Successive chapters do not, and the spacing between lines is different. It sucks. Apparently the numbering function is unable to tell what chapter it is in.....

How are things down under? Summer approaching? Hope the drought is easing. Thanks John.
