MS Word defaults

Everytime I open up a Word document, it displays a two column page. It
appears that the two column setup is a default. I need to know how to change
this setting to one column page default.

The other question is, "How do I change the measurement setting in Word?" I
have tried to change the measurement setting by going through, "Tools,
Options, General Tab and changed the measurement to inches and the page still
shows different measurement than inches. It appears to look like centimeters
or pixels.
