I have a 180 page document that contains a document map.
This document map is corrupted and I want to delete it and
generate a new map. Is this possible?

Hi Hardie,

No, it isn't possible to delete the document map.

I suspect that the problem is that there are a bunch of items in the
document map which have been put in as first-level headings, which you
didn't want as headigns at all. Word has the annoying habit of sometimes
going through the document and taking a guess at paragraphs which it thinks
liik like they ought to be headings even if they don't have one of the
Heading styles.

What you can do is position the cursor on each ot the offending paragraphs
in the document, and press Ctrl-Q. This should reset the paragraph format
(including the outline level setting) and by that measn eliminate the
paragraph from the document map.

The Document Map just shows what is in your document. The DM feature is
notorious for promoting Body Text level paragraphs to heading levels if you
haven't been scrupulous in your assignment of styles. The only way to
correct this is by manually demoting the promoted paragraphs and assigning
appropriate styles.
