MS Word does not load when I open a webmail attached Word document

MS Word does not start when I try to open an email attached Word document, it
gets stuck with half-opened Word, the top blue bar flashing; and I need to
hard switch off the computer. But if the Word program is already opened, I
can open the attached document in the pre-opened Word. If I disable Norton
anti-virus program, I still have the same problem.

This problem began occuring only for several weeks.

I can open all other sorts of attachment (Eg, Excel, PowerPoint) without
pre-opening the applications. The attempt to open the attachment loads the
application and opens the document in it.

I use hotmail, Word 2003 and Windows XP SP2 on Dell Inspiron laptop Pentium 4.

It sounds like a NAV problem. When you say you disabled Norton, did you
actually open NAV and disable the Office Plug-in option. Just disabling or
even uninstalling NAV does not remove the plug-in problem.
