MS Word does not open

I recently upgraded from OS 10.1.3 to 10.4.8 and also from MS Office 98
to 2004. My Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage open fine but the Word
will not open, just gets stuck there on the introductory screen and I
have to Force Quit. I already rebooted the computer. What to do?

Did you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after the upgrades? Have
you installed the lates Office updates (11.3, then 11.3.2) - if not go ahead
& do so, then repair permissions again.

If you continue to have problems post back with more detail about your Mac
as well as your results..

You could also be facing a font issue, but try the complete updates first.

Bob,

I installed 11.3, then 11.3.2 then did repair permissions again but
still no dice.

Then I called MS and we checked the following:

1. Fonts
2. Reinstalling program
3. Login items

Couldn't locate the source of the problem in those three items.

We found that I am able to open Word if I hold down the shift key as I
double-click on the icon. Also, I can open it if I create a new
account and log into the computer under that. I guess Word just
doesn't like me as me...?

At this point the tech support guy was stumped and we had to end the
call.

Can anybody here step in at this point?

Then go to this page & follow the troubleshoting tips on Normal &
Preferences - there is apparently a problem with your user prefs or the
Normal template.

You could also just set up a permanent new user & get rid of the one that's
gone bonkers.
