Ms Word margins

Hi
I have a Compaq Presario 5300. Came with Miscrosoft Works. Works fine, except it won't let me change the top margin to less than 1 inch, neither in portrait nor it landscame. The side margins I can change, bigger, smaller whatever. Top margin I can make bigger but not smaller.. Isn't that crazy
I uninstalled & reinstalled Works; same problem. I borrowed someone else's software to reinstall. Same results
Is there hope
