MS Word really slow to open and close

My computer and a friends are both Interl P3s running XP
and MS Word 2002 with Service pack 1. We are both finding
it incedibly slow to open and close Word. We think it may
be a problem with the normal template and are thinking of
customising Word so that it doesnt open at all. Can this
be done and if not, any odeas on speeding up performance?

There's a command-line switch that stops Word loading any templates or
add-ins, including normal.dot, but this is not likely to be a good solution.
