MS Word "tab" disappears from screen

I am using MS Word 2002, Windows XP. I often leave Word, Excel, IE, etc.
minimized at the bottom of my screen for quick recall. Whenever I choose to
maximize Word and there is not an open document, it closes completely. No
other running programs do this. This just started happening recently and I
cannot figure out whey.
