MS Word: "The program is not repsonding." How to open????

I am attempting to open a 2003 MS Office Word file chock full of art pasted
from Paint. The file will not open. Each attempt renders a mesaage "The
program is not responding" and requests to send a message to Microsoft. How
to open??!! Need to edit and do not want to start over with this project.

After you try to open the document and are waiting for the program to
respond, press the ctrl+alt+delete keys to bring up the Windows security
dialog box which includes a button for task manager. After the box is
displayed press the cancel button. This may now allow the word document to
open correctly. I have the same issue with word documents that have a lot of
artwork and tables embedded in them and this seems to work. I am still
trying to find out and fix the cause of this frustration.
