MS-Word unstable on a Dell system

Dear NG,

I encounter serious stability problems with MS-Word (from Office 2003 pro).
Installation runs OK, but when I open Word, it almost immediately crashes
without reasons, and asks whether I would want to send an error report to
Microsoft.

The funny thing is that Excel, and the other Office apps. seem to be
stable.....

My system is DELL dimension 5000, XP/SP2.
On my system MS-Works was pre-installed (and still is installed) and I
installed a network printer, with the driver on this pc.
After a few months, I installed Office 2003.

I already checked http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/index.htm, but could not find a
solution here....

Anyone any ideas? Thanks!

Might be worth a try....

Could be the normal.dot template has been corrupted. Being the first thing
Word uses.

Go to Search and look for normal.dot. When it comes up rename it to say
normal2.dot. Reboot and Word will automatically insert a new normal.dot
template.

Good luck,

Ed

Have you checked with Dell?

Not yet, because I think it's not DELL, but some XP-Office-Works
conflict......

I can browse the DELL faqs, though.

Folkert, you may have a corrupted template file.

Go to help and search for "Customize how Word starts."

Try starting Word with the switch for /safe, /n, or /w.

I had the same problem on a different laptop with Word2000 and Normal.dot
was corrupted. The above suggested switches don't in so many words say Word
will start without using your corrupted template. I seem to recall the
switch I used was a specific switch that could be used for that espresso
porpoise.

Alternatively, you could rename your Normal.dot template file and Word will
create a new one when it starts. You'll lose whatever customization was
present in the corrupted file, alas.

From time to time I create a backup copy of Normal.dot so at least I've got
some working versions to go back to pre-Pearl Harbor Day.

Hope this works.

/safe mode works as I hoped.

"During startup, Office checks for problems such as an add-in or extension
that won't start, or a corrupted resource, file, registry, or template. "

The /a switch, which is usually recommended, does the same thing.

dear all,

thanks for the suggestions. I will try them and see if it works.

Somehow I recall that ms-works (installed on this system), could also cause
problems. I cannot find any info on that, though....

Thanks, Folkert/ Holland

If you install the Works Suite Add-in, it does cause peculiar problems with
Word - thought not those you have described. Check in Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs for the Works Suite Add-in and Uninstall it just to be
safe.

update sunday 11:00 GMT+1:

I think I found the (one of the...) cause of my problem.

I have a printer installed on this DELL-PC as network printer. AFAIK the
driver of this printer is on the DELL-PC
Physically however, this (shared) printer is connected to another PC in my
wireless network.

Somehow, by default this printer reports itself as "not ready" when I open
the "printers and faxes" menu on the DELL-PC.
That is when I encounter the problems in Word.
When I refresh the window of "printers and faxes", the printer reports
"ready", and I can run word, and even can print (with some delay....)

I will dig into the printer-settings and try to force the printer to report
intself as "ready" by default.
