Why does a virus scan attempt to run when I now open a Word document - this
process locks up my computer?

This has only recently started to happen.

You installed an anti-virus application which has an option to scan Word
documents when you open them. Not a Word problem. If you happened to
install Norton Anti-Virus, in Options, Miscellaneous clear Enable Office
Plug-in. If you are using another anti-virus application, you need to look
at the options.
