msg "too many edits in the document" appears in WORD

I have a 47 page document including a table of contents. When I try to edit
it, I get this message & I can't edit it!
I defragmented my disk, so that's not the problem.

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

Open the document and save it in RTF format and close Word. Reopen Word and
the rtf document and save it back again as a .doc. Does that resolve the
problem?
