MsiInstaller complains on Visio 2000 startup

J

John D.

If this has been posted already, I apologize.
I am running Visio 2000 Ent. Edition on my D drive.
The MSDE (7) is loaded on the C drive. When I start Vision
I get a lot of application event warnings from the
MsiInstaller...

"Failed to connect to server. Error 0x800401F0"

Don't know if it's complaining about the MSDE server but
when I start the server, it makes no difference. Any help
would be appreciated. Install the MSDE on the D drive? I
don't know how that would help. Anyhoo, please get back
to me. It's driving me crazy as well as filling up my App
event log file. I know I could remedy that, but it's the
principle of the thing. Thanks again.

Hi John,

This is a Microsoft Installer issue. With the Installation of the updates of Windows from Microsoft site, the problem will be resolved.
To get the installer, Visit the site on http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=32832&NewList=1 and get the download

Restart the computer and Launch Visio

Umesh,

Unfortunately, when I try to install InstMsiW.exe it
says that the service is already installed (I am running
Windows 2000 with SP4 which comes with automatic updates).
It's wierd, something in the Visio 2000 installation is
causing a complete bypass of Automatic Updates and is
calling directly into the MsiServer. I believe the
explorer is calling a server that is incorrect. Also, I
get a "Failed to connect to the server. Error: 0x800401F0"
about 100 times or so in the event log. Visio 2000 has 86
packages that it installs on a full local install.
Something (I believe) pertaining to Visio 2000 in the
registry is causing the left hand turn. BTW. This has
also been seen on Windows XP. Any help would be
appreciated.

Actually, the message you describe is normal behavior for Visio on systems
running Windows Installer 1.2 and above. It does not indicate an error -
and nothing is wrong with your Visio installation. Here is an article on
the knowledge Base which discusses the concern :
294014 Visio2002: Event Is Logged in Application Log When You Start Visio
: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=294014

As the article mentions, there is some (normal) installer activity when
Visio 2000 and 2002 launch which cause the Installer to record these
messages. Sorry for the confusion.

Barb,

To me this is not "Works as Designed". This is a BUG
and should be fixed. Who wants to see 120 MsiInstaller
Informational messages in the Event Viewer about "Can't
Connect to Server" every time you start Visio?
