msinfo.exe file

Bob Jones

Hi

Hope some of you folks don't mind a question from a non
techie!

When I startup I get an error message "cannot find
msinfo.exe file" and a reference to the WIN.INI file.

From what I read on the MS site this may be something to
do with Office 2000 but I've tried to reinstall and I
still get the error message on start up.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Bob

Hi, Bob,

Could you post the exact error message? What operating system are you
running? Has this error always occurred, or is it recent?

When you say "it refers to the WIN.INI file", what do you mean? What is the
exact text of the message in which it refers to the WIN.INI file?

What operating system are you using?

Have you made any changes to your system in the last few days?

Hi Bob,

You can get this from the issue in this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;229448
and also if there's more than one version on the
PC and the registry uses the wrong one.

Hi Sue

I'm using 98SE.

The first error screen says "cannot find the file
msinfo.exe(or one of its components).

When I click OK the second screen appears and says "Could
not load or run the file msinfo.exe specified in the
WIN.INI file. Make sure the file exists on your computer
or remove the reference to it on the WIN.INI file"

I've done some archiving to CD in the last cuople of days,
installed WINRAR bt apart from this can't think of
anything exceptional.

Idon't know if a file continues to run when its in the
recycle bin but I'm always tidying that up but I try not
to remove any files I think might be important.

Hope this helps and thanks.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it and, unfortunately,
it does'nt work; I still get the same error message.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Bob,

Open the win.ini in a text editor, and see where it points to the msinfo.exe
file. Look in that path and see if the file is in there. If not, try
moving it to that location. If there's no path, check your path statement
and see if it has changed recently; it could be that so that the msinfo.exe
file can't be found if it exists if the path statement doesn't include its
path. (If you're not sure how to check the path statement, post back.)

Did you look for multiple copies like Bob suggested?

Hi again Sue

I've opened the WIN.INI in Wordpad and the only reference
to the msinfo.exe file is the following:

"run=C:\WINDOWS\_ _\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MSINFO\msinfo.exe

device = HP LaserJet 2100 Series PCL 6,
HPB1gBG,\\Fujita\hp"

This is the network printer.

For some reason recently I did notice that my printers had
somehow "disappeared" and I had to reinstall them on the
system; I don't know if this had anything to do with the
problem. As far as I can remember this problem did'nt start
immediately after this time.

As far as I can see there are no duplicate files in the
MSINFO folder.

Hope this helps and thanks.

Hi, Bob,

That path looks strange for a couple of reasons: 1) usually the Program
Files folder is at c:\program files, not c:\windows\program files; and 2)
that _ _ directory looks wrong.

(As an aside, if you have programs are installed in c:\windows\program
files\, you may want to consider uninstalling them and re-installing them to
c:\program files. It's usually best to not install programs to the Windows
directory. However, it may be that your win.ini is weird and your programs
are fine.)

Do this for me: Search your hard drive in its entirety and tell me the
location of all copies of msinfo.exe. Then I can give you some next steps.

You mentioned you installed WINRAR...could it have made unwanted changes to
the WIN.INI file or other system files? Or, when you archived things to CD,
could you have deleted any system files?
