And in addition to what Diane said, having used most of them, IMHO they are
not half as good as a proper news reader.

Diane is right, of course, and if you're considering 3rd party programs let
me put in a kind word for NewsHound from Shoreline Software. I found it to
be quite good.

But still has limitations compared to a dedicated news reader...

Which limitations did you have in mind?

It's a long time since I tried all the major NNTP add-ins for Outlook, but
none of them provided all the functions that a dedicated news reader
did......so I didn't use any of them after a trial period.

I believe, although as I say, it was a long time ago, that the filtering and
threading wasn't as good.

I have tried Newshound last year and I did not find any limitations on using it

I've just realised the limitations - ( I downloaded the latest version to
give it another try just now but the same thing happens) for some reason on
my version of Outlook 2007 IT DOESN'T WORK!
I install it but get no Newshound menu anywhere so I can't set it up.
I've emailed the newshound support several times about this but got NO
answer. At ALL.
So I binned it....

How odd - worked great for me on Outlook 2007 (but won't install on the
beta of Outlook 2010 64-bit).

If you do View | Toolbars do you see NewsHound listed?
No.

If you going to the Add-Ins management do you see it listed there?

No.

Hmmm. Strange. I assume you had Outlook closed when you tried to install
NewsHound? Have you tried re-downloading NewsHound in case the d/l was
corrupted?

Sorry you're having problems with it - I really liked it and was very
disappointed to discover it won't install on my Outlook 2010, 64-bit. I
contacted their support folks who assured me they were going to fix that.
Naturally I don't have a lot of expectations for it to work with beta
software, I'm just hoping it's fixed by the time OL2010 actually ships.

Same for TwInbox.

Yes. Outlook was closed. I'll try re-downloading...

I just tried and installed Newshound. Worked like a charm on this OL 2003. Now to
remove it

Well good for you. It hasn't worked at all on Outlook 2007 either in Vista
or Windows 7 here.

User error :) It ran fine for me with 32bit Outlook - it was a very
pleasant surprise over the last build I tried, which pretty much made OE
look like the perfect news reader. It was hard to give it (and Auto-mate)
up for the x64 beta. :( I ended up setting up a VM with outlook 2007 and
those apps, so I can at least read the technet and msdn groups in outlook
(and autofilter mail after I read it). My only problem is that outlook 2010
puts a lot of the posts in the junk folder as it downloads them from the
exchange server.

As I explained - for some reason it didn't install properly. I could add a
News account in Account settings, but there was no Newshound menu anywhere
that I could see.
This happened more than once, in Outlook 2007, both in Vista Home Premium
and in Win 7RC...

And to add to that, I emailed Shoreline support about this several times and
got absolutely NO response at ALL.
