MSOXMLED.exe???

G

George Hester

I installed Microsoft Office 2003 Enterprise and FrontPage 2003 Professional. Now my xml icon is all messed up AND Windows Explorer is NOT using its Default Icon from the registry. What it is showing is a STOP Windows Executable icon.

Also I have a place in the registry here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xmlfile\shell\edit\command

Which is showing this:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11\MSOXMLED.EXE" /verb edit "%1"

as the default for the edit command. What the heck is this MSOXMLED.exe? Where is that obtained? Why is Microsoft Office 2003 installing a call to an executable that DOES NOT EXIST?

This is likely why I have a bogus icon for xml files that WILL NOT CHANGE in the normal fashion. What are we guniea pigs for new Microsoft products? Isn't that the definition of Beta testers? Is Microsoft Office 2003 out of Beta or not?

Windows 2000 Server SP3 Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 Microsoft Office 2003.

Oh this file is in the Common Shared area. MSOXMLED.exe. I double-clicked on it. Nothing. No error. No nothing. It does not even exist in running processes.

MSOXMLED.exe is a helper application, installed by Office2003, which
determines which Office application a given XML file should be opened with.

If you don't want to use Office to edit XML, simply re-register your
previous XML editor as the default handling application.

If you choose Detect and Repair on the Frontpage menu, it should replace the
missing file.

This file will not do anything and will immediately exit unless you pass it
an XML file as a parameter.

I'll have to try that.

The icon problem was a corrupted shelliconcache which was fixed by Display properties raise and lower the size of icons.

Thanks for the information on this file.
