I was updating my Office XP Small Business from the
microsoft site and something in a download caused my PC
to crash, first and only time so I believe it was a
result of the download. After the restart I was unable to
apply updates for Windows XP (have corrected by following
suggestions on microsoft site) and still get the
error "unable to check for updates" when running the
microsoft scan for updates for windows. I believe it may
be a problem with windows installer patch files as part
of the error message is;
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing
you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result
of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support for assistance
My problem is I have a legal copy of Microsoft XP Small
Business with all Microsoft documentation and product key
numbers but my product ID number is a registered OEM
number and Microsoft directs me to them and they have
been of no help.
Can anyone direct me to a site that will help me edit the
MSP files.
