MSWord 2000 - Mail merge command repeats in Tool menu

I have a very strange problem. The Mail Merge command repeats in the
Tool menu. Not just a few times - Mail Merge repeats more times than I
can count. It seems to be causing a problem when Word starts up, and I
suspect it is making Word crash on occassion.

Has anyone seen this problem or something similar to it?

If you have, what did you do to solve it?

Word 2000 from Office 2000 Professional
Windows XP SP2
Office 2000 has been uninstalled and reinstalled once after this
problem was observed.
Office 2000 Service Pack 3 has been applied.
Detect and Repair does not fix the problem.

Did Word 2000 come preinstalled with Works Suite on the computer? If
so then it's the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word causing the
problem.

Go to your Control Panel and in Add/Remove programs uninstall the
"Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word". Note that this doesn't
uninstall Works, it just removes some of the Works functionality in
Word.

Once this is complete then locate Normal.dot and rename it to
OldNormal.dot. Word will create a new one upon starting. I recommend
this to make sure you remove all traces of the Works add-in. .

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

Additionally, you should check to see if Word 2000 is installed as
part of the Office 2000 installation. If Word 2000 was preinstalled
then there's a good chance when you installed Office 2000 it didn't
install Word since it found an existing installation. If that's the
case, uninstall Word and then reinstall it using the Office 2000
installation CDs. Otherwise you may encounter strange errors and
complications when it comes to add/removing components, updating, and
patching the Office 2000 installation.
